It is usually really hard to help children take an interest in household jobs. As they seem too irrelevant, and boring and usually seem to force them out of their comfort zone. This does not only help them be a helping hand at home but also helps them understand their social responsibilities. It gives them a sense of accomplishment and self-respect as they start to feel themselves to be an important part of the family and useful too.

There are several ways to motivate children but the most effective one is the daily chore portfolio. Which not only helps them motivate but also teaches them the basis of finance. This gives them a sense of responsibility toward the money they “earn” as they have to think how hard they had to work for it. Teaching children about these values is a long process but the following is important in this regard:

Different Chores for Different Age Groups: a chore chart can best serve its purpose if it’s fit for the age group it is trying to address. It would be highly inappropriate to assume that a chore chart meant for 10-year-olds would be also as useful for a grownup teenager. Thereby we have to make various charts for every age group. Secondly, the level of chores will also vary according to the age group. Implementing these chores is not an easy task as you as a head of the family teach your children on different levels as to how and why a particular chore has to be done in a particular way. For example, why do we have to separate light and dark colors before laundry? Etc.

Your family chore portfolio must be very attractive and interesting. Some parents have been observed to put the “pay” right under the chore “to do note” so that the child completes his work he can get his money right away. There are endless examples, you’d have to search for the one that suits your children. The rule of thumb is that whatever you are going to use to motivate the child it must be understandable and attractive to him.

Once you are done with making this portfolio, it must be posted or placed somewhere they are visible. There are several options ranging from a consolidated board in the hallway to or more dispersed approach. For example, tasks related to the kitchen are to be posted there, and so on. The most crucial part of this whole exercise is to decide what will be the most acceptable way of “remuneration” to your children.

That should be something that should not only motivate them to do their part of the work but should also teach them a lesson. Rewards may not necessarily be in the form of money they might be gifts, books, movies a trip, etc. Again this is highly contingent upon the choice of family and available choices.
