People who complain that they usually miss their connecting flights always make the mistake of not putting enough time in between connecting flights. You are on a vacation so you can move a couple of hours around. Make sure to have enough time between your connecting flights and even if you have to wait for 4 or 5 hours for the next flight, you can visit the city and add it to your vacation planning list.
